The brand new Commercial Digital Printer Skills Programme was successfully piloted in Gauteng during 2016 and is currently being rolled out to all other Regions.  This skills programme consists of knowledge, practical skills and workplace experience modules and is recognised by the FP&M SETA as an NQF Level 3 programme.

Knowledge Modules:
Module 1: Introduction to Digital Printing

This module comprises 6 units and covers the basics of the elements that are involved in the digital printing environments. The difference between digital printing and traditional printing will be explored as well as the types of machinery and processes involved.

  • Unit 1: Overview of the history and development in digital printing.
  • Unit 2: Workflows from receiving files to pre-flight checking to raster image processing, printing, finishing and packing.
  • Unit 3: Introduction to digital printing processes, including, design for print and desktop design programs.
  • Unit 4: The finishing process.
  • Unit 5: Variable data printing.
  • Unit 6: Overview of the various occupations available in the field.
Module 2:  DTP & File Design

This module comprises 6 units covering the field of Desktop publishing and file design.

  • Unit 1:  The desktop publishing process, including, how to prepare files in different DTP software applications for print and the web.
  • Unit 2: Desktop tools and resources (Resolution, printers’ marks, PDF creation and file conversion).
  • Unit 3: File formats (CMYK, RGB, print designs, wide & narrow format printing)
  • Unit 4: Raster image processing (RIPS), including vector and bitmap file formats and pre-press and press/machine proofing.
  • Unit 5: Variable data printing (including web-to-print).
  • Unit 6: Pre-flighting, impositioning and proofing.
Module 3: Colour

The Colour Module aims to convey the basic colour theory applicable in today’s digital printing industry. Colour perception, colour standards and charts are discussed in depth, including colour theory, FOGRA 39 & ICC profiles.

  • Unit 1: How colour is made up for printing or for viewing on the monitor.
  • Unit 2: Colour perception.
  • Unit 3: How temperature affects ink.
  • Unit 4: Colour charts and standards.
Module 4: Inks

This module deals with the inks used in laser and ink jet printing.

  • Unit 1: Types of ink.
  • Unit 2: Matching of inks to machines and media.
  • Unit 3: Health, safety and environmental concerns.
  • Unit 4: How ink affects the look of finished products.
Module 5: Media

This module is split into two sections and covers wide and cut sheet format print media.

Section A:

  • Unit 1: The difference between office printers and production printers.
  • Unit 2: Storage and maintenance of reels.
  • Unit 3: The environmental impact of the wide format printing.
  • Unit 4: Quality control.

Section B:

  • Unit 5: Media and substrates.
  • Unit 6: Storage and maintenance of sheets.
  • Unit 7: The environmental impact of cut sheet printing.
  • Unit 8: Quality control.

Module 6: Finishing

This module delivers a broad overview of bindery theory, cutting, folding, lamination, in-line, off-line and near-line finishing. It also deals with the process of covering, quality control, packaging, mounting, seams, bonding and safety within the printing industry.
